Music and legacy of late singer Ian Tyson coming to Medicine Hat’s Monarch Theatre

The performance features more than two dozen Tyson songs led by pianist and singer Stewart MacDougall.

The setlist includes well-known songs such as “Someday Soon,” “Summer Wages,” “Alberta’s Child,” “Navajo Rug,” “Four Strong Winds” and “Some Kind of Fool.”

The show will also feature lesser-known songs from Tyson’s catalogue, including “Cowboy Pride,” “MC Horses,” “Casey Tibbs,” “Elko Blues” and “The Gift.”

The musicians performing have more than 60 years of combined experience working with Tyson in the studio and on the road.

Organizers say Tyson himself embraced the project, joining the group on stage several times and expressing his appreciation for the tribute.

The production has been presented at festivals and venues across Canada, including the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, Big Valley Jamboree and Dauphin’s Countryfest.

Organizers say the show offers longtime fans an opportunity to hear Tyson’s music performed by people who knew him and worked alongside him, while also introducing his songwriting to a new generation.

The Sept. 17 performance at the Monarch Theatre begins at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m.

The Monarch Theatre had closed for renovations and is set to reopen on Aug. 22 during Downtown Days.
