‘Always on our minds’: Medicine Hat musician finds inspiration from city throughout Canada

Feb 15, 2025 | 4:50 PM

Tyler Casat is a musician originally from Medicine Hat who has since taken his songs across the country, ending up in Calgary.

His band One to Walk recently released their first album by the same name.

Casat said that Medicine Hat, and the stories that each band member has from the city, are a big part of what the album now looks like.

He said that the band works with local organizations in the city to put together shows, and that he’s appreciated being surrounded by talented people who were willing to support them.

“The community of Medicine Hat has been so supportive of us as a band that anytime it comes to the point of, ‘Okay, what’s next? What are we going to do now?’ It’s always on our minds,” he said.

“‘How can we find a way to kind of give that support back to the community and who can we work with?'” he added.

“We did a show at the Esplanade a couple of months ago, partnered with the Women’s Shelter and Stewart Optical, and it was just a great chance to collaborate with some amazing people.”

Casat said that he was lucky to meet team members of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, because he feels they don’t often get the recognition they deserve.

He said that if there’s a chance that the band can find a way to work with local groups to bring attention to what they’re doing, it benefits them both.

He said he can’t praise organizations like the MHWSS enough.

The band created the new album in Quebec, and made the drive across the country back to Alberta where they made some adjustments to reflect on the experience that came with it.

“We were really fortunate to spend time across Canada, and go through all the provinces while we were working on this and playing shows,” he said.

“I think the stories that we’re trying to tell are really about Canadian, small town, common experiences. That when you meet these people, they’re so keen to share their stories with you,” he added.

“To reflect that in the music is really cool. So I think it deals a lot with nostalgia, but looking back while still moving forward.”

Casat said that he’s very proud to be from Medicine Hat, where the art scene is so flourishing, and compared it to a desert oasis.

He said his band gives him the chance to share with a broader audience everything that Medicine Hat has to offer.

One to Walk will have upcoming shows in Medicine Hat, that are yet to be announced.
