Alberta public sectors workers union holding ‘urgent’ Medicine Hat town hall

A tour by Alberta’s public sector workers union to rally employees during bargaining negotiations with the government is stopping in Medicine Hat on Monday.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, known as AUPE, is hosting more than 50 “Time for Action” town hall meetings across the province, organizers said.

Union negotiations with the Alberta government, Alberta Health Services and several more employers have reached a “critical stage”, according to AUPE.

The 82,000 AUPE members who entered collective bargaining this year have proposed increases to wages, benefits and working conditions that reflect the work they do and keep up with the rising cost of living.

A southern Alberta AUPE executive said the workers are stronger united.

“The only way for us to win the contracts we deserve is to fight together, and it is time to gather our strength,” south region vice president Curtis Jackson said.

The “urgent town hall” gets underway at 6:30 p.m. at Medicine Hat Lodge, according to a schedule of its time for action tour.

AUPE held a town hall in Brooks last week and will make stops in Drumheller, Lethbridge, Taber and Cardston in the coming weeks.
