Political newcomer and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy wins Montana Republican Senate primary
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Former Navy SEAL and aerial firefighting business owner Tim Sheehy has won Montana’s Republican Senate primary.
The political newcomer will face off against three-term Democratic U.S. Sen. Jon Tester in what is shaping up to be an expensive campaign that could determine which party holds the political power in the U.S. Senate. Democrats currently hold a 51-49 advantage.
Republicans have dominated recent Montana elections, leaving Tester as the only Democrat holding statewide office.
Tester is considered a moderate in Washington and has emphasized his work for veterans and his roots as a third-generation farmer in central Montana.
