Runner shares cross-Canada journey with Hatters to support cancer research

Winnipeg-born Jackson Charron-Okerlund completed a run across Canada last year, finding inspiration in his hero Terry Fox.

Charron-Okerlund managed to raise $100,000 for cancer research over the course of his journey, but he didn’t stop there.

“I said at the end of my run, my marathon was over, but my fight for a cure was not,” Charron-Okerlund told CHAT News.

After completing his 7,000 kilometer run across Canada with a stuffed moose strapped to his backpack, Charron-Okerlund wrote “Brunswick’s Big Adventure.”

The book narrates his journey through the eyes of the moose.

Charron-Okerlund is in Medicine Hat Monday selling his book, with $10 of every sale a portion of the proceeds going to cancer research.

“The end goal of all this is to just get that number of [cancer] losses down to zero. That was what Terry’s dream was and gosh, 44 years later, we’re still losing 86,000 Canadians a year to their battle against cancer,” Charron-Okerlund said.

“Lots of work to be done and I’m gonna devote every day of my life until my time is up to hopefully finding a cure and making sure everyone can live a full life.”

Charron-Okerlund will be selling his book in Kin Coulee Park until 8 p.m. Monday night.
