Four local high schools display their art this weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The artwork of four local high schools are on display this weekend at Medicine Hat College.

Yulin Wang, the Arts and Design Instructor, says he’s thoroughly impressed by this year’s submissions.

“It’s amazing and all the high school students works. They did an excellent job, and we can see the passion, the great energies and the times. And I really appreciate all the high school instructors – they did an amazing job.”

In total, sixty works will be presented at the event. Wang says this year, students used different mediums, like paintings, mixed mediums and sculptures. Students also explored different disciplines of art.

Highschool teachers had selected the best pieces from their classes, and the college’s faculty then reviewed the submissions.

The exhibition displays the work of students from Eagle Butte High School, Crescent Heights High School, Medicine Hat High School and Monsignor McCoy High School.

Academic Chair of Arts, Mark Kaethler, says the pieces that resonate with faculty members most, will be rewarded on a first, second and third-place basis.

“It’s really about showcasing the talent from the youth in the community, and kind of celebrating that – we’ll be giving out some rewards at some point to those who have kind of placed within our faculty evaluations of the art. They’re giving out some honorable mentions as well,” said Kaethler.

Kaethler says it’s a great way to celebrate young art within the community.

The exhibition and tour happens on Feb. 11 to 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

For those unable to attend this weekend, the art remains on display in the One on One Gallery until Feb. 24. Works can be viewed during gallery hours.
