Irvine Lions Club opposed to location for new resource centre in town

CYPRESS COUNTY, AB – The Irvine and District Lions Club is calling on Cypress County to immediately halt progress on a new library and resource centre for the town.

In a letter sent to Cypress County Council dated Jan. 11, the club says it is opposed to the proposed location of the centre in the current Woodward Memorial Park. Having maintained the park for many years, the Lions would like to see it stay in its current location and state.

The club is also calling for an open public meeting to be held with all members of Cypress County Council to allow for discussion.

The resource centre project has been years in the making. Public consultations began in 2017 and Reeve Dan Hamilton says everybody had their input, including the library. Last month Hamilton told CHAT News he and other county officials made many visits to Irvine to scout potential locations before making their decision in November.

Irvine’s library will be moved across the street to the 3,600-square-foot centre which will also house a board room. Outside will be a playground and an upgraded Woodward Memorial Park.

“It fit into our plan, it was looked at, it’s still going to be a park there. The park’s going to be a little smaller but it’s still going to be there. And it’s just right across the street from where the original library is right now,” Hamilton said at the time.
