Important flood protection training on Wednesday

Flood training exercise requires closure of key road on June 1

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The city will be conducting a flood protection training session tomorrow and that will mean closure of a key intersection in Riverside.

Parkview Drive and Altawana Avenue N.E. will be closed Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Third Avenue N.E. at the intersection of Parkview Drive will be temporarily converted to a two-way roadway to allow access in and out of Riverside.

Heavy truck traffic will be directed through the closure by flag personnel.

Motorists are reminded to follow all detour signage and posted speed limits.

The training exercise involves the installation of a specialized flood wall and is not related to any perceived or impending threat.

Two weeks ago the city held a flood response exercise at the Esplanade.

“It’s a good opportunity for all of our city staff that’s involved in flood response to practice and you know just understand the coordination of working together from a field operations side to emergency social services to emergency operations centre operations,” Merrick Brown, manager of support services in emergency services, said at the time.
