Rattlers hoping to find success at golf provincials

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat College Rattlers are hunting for a national golf championship appearance this weekend.

The men’s and women’s Rattlers golf team will be competing at the Coal Creek Golf Course near Camrose over the weekend at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference provincial championship.

The top two teams in the men’s and women’s brackets qualify for the National Championship in Quebec, along with a handful of individuals.

The women’s team have captured gold at the provincials for the past three years, and recently finished in first place at the South Division Championship, winning by two strokes.

“It was good for them to understand that if they do play their own game, and if everything goes their way, they get a few good bounces and that, they can win ACAC’s next week,” said Dillon Batsel, head coach of both Rattlers golf teams, noting hard work is being emphasized for the team.

The men’s team are looking for their first provincial medal in five years this weekend, and Batsel says the team, based on their play at the earlier season tournaments, has a lot of potential.

“I’d rather the guys get a grip on where their games are at, make the adjustments this week, and hopefully, if everything goes right, their best performance is saved for last,” he said.

“I feel like we’re very hungry now,” said Derek Whitson, a second year member of the men’s golf team. “I feel like we haven’t show our true potential. There are definitely some guys who have put in some good rounds and can build off of it, and there’s guys that haven’t even cracked what they normally can do. I think as a team, we’re really going to come together and push each other to be better each day.”

Tee times begin at 10 a.m. on Friday.
