Skateboarders and other wheeled-sport enthusiasts in Medicine Hat have a new temporary place to ride.

Portable skate ramps are now installed at the Jeffries Park Outdoor Rink for a limited-time pilot project.

The ramps will be available daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Oct. 1 through Oct. 12, before being removed on Oct. 13.

The pilot will allow the City to test portable skate amenities and gather feedback from users and nearby residents.

A community skate event is scheduled for Saturday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the park.

The event is being hosted in partnership with the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association and will include a Best Trick competition, prizes, snacks and drinks.

Parks and Recreation staff will be on-site during the pilot’s opening days to answer questions and gather user feedback. Staff will also visit the site at different times throughout the pilot.

Skaters and other ramp users can scan QR codes at the park to complete a survey about their experience.

The City will also conduct sound monitoring at different times during the pilot, including baseline readings and measurements during periods of peak use, to assess the impact on the surrounding area.

A portable washroom will be available at the site for the duration of the pilot.

The City notified nearby residents about the project before installing ramps. They also provided contact information for questions or concerns.

A separate survey for nearby residents will open Oct. 14 and remain available for seven days.

Feedback gathered from skaters and residents will help the City assess how portable skate amenities are being used and inform future decisions about recreation opportunities in Medicine Hat.
