Medicine Hat Catholic schools superintendent to retire in 2027

“Catholic education has been at the heart of my professional life, and I am deeply grateful for the relationships, experiences and opportunities that have shaped my time with the division.”

Zarichny has more than 33 years of experience in education, including teaching, administration and leadership.

During his time with the Catholic division, enrollment has grown to about 3,000 students, and the division has added specialty programming.

The division also prepares for the opening of Holy Trinity Academy in fall 2027, shortly after Zarichny’s retirement date.

Board chair Kathy Glasgo said Zarichny’s experience and leadership have been valuable to the board and the wider community.

“We are thankful for the eight years of dedication, thoughtful work and leadership that Dr. Zarichny has given to our division and community,” Glasgo said in a statement.

“His expertise in governance has been an invaluable asset to our board. We look forward to working with him in his final year and wish him the very best in his retirement.”

Zarichny said there is still work to be done before he leaves the position, including helping ensure a smooth transition to new leadership.

“While retirement will mark the beginning of a new chapter for me and my family, there is still important work ahead over the coming year,” Zarichny said.

“I look forward to welcoming the new superintendent and supporting the Board, our staff and our school communities through a strong and successful transition.”

The board says it is grateful for Zarichny’s years of service and the impact of his leadership on the division.

The MHCBE Trustees are developing a plan to search for his successor ahead of his retirement.
