Two Medicine Hat Catholic schools to get new names in 2027; Superintendent set to retire

MHCBE said they did not receive any opposition to the name change. They added that facility signage and other branding at the two schools will be updated as required to reflect the change.

Students from the Junior High School at St. Mary’s will relocate to Holy Trinity Academy in September 2027.

The school is currently under construction and will also bring the students from St. Francis Xavier and St. Michael’s elementary schools under one roof with the St. Mary’s students at the new K-9 school.

St. Francis Xavier School will be torn down in spring 2027 to allow for the construction of the parking lot for Holy Trinity Academy. The displaced students will be relocated into the new school at that time, with the students from the other schools joining in the fall.

Also noted during the Sept. 8 meeting is the retirement of Superintendent Dwayne Zarichny on Aug. 31, 2027.

The MHCBE Trustees approved a motion at the meeting to authorize the Board Chair to develop and bring forward a proposed superintendent transition and recruitment process for the board’s consideration.

Zarichny became the Superintendent of Schools for the MHCBE in August 2019.
