The opening set went down to the wire, with Medicine Hat taking advantage after the score reached 14-14 and the first team to 17 points winning the set.

The visitors impressed the crowd with high-flying acrobatics, including back-flip spikes and high-reaching kick serves, but struggled to stay consistent in the second set.

Medicine Hat’s server and spiker remained steady through the final points to secure the championship.

The victory capped the first time Medicine Hat has hosted the Canadian national championship, which brought eight teams and 31 matches to the city.

Teams from Medicine Hat, Rosthern Sask., Calgary, Edmonton and a combined Saskatchewan-British Columbia squad competed in the tournament.

Sepak Takraw, commonly known as kick-volleyball, is played by teams of three on a badminton-sized court.

Players cannot use their hands or arms, instead using their feet, legs, head, and other parts of the body to serve, set and attack a hand-woven ball.

The Medicine Hat B lineup included Knoukham Keomanivong, who previously helped a Medicine Hat team win the Canadian championship in 2024.

Keomanivong said ahead of the tournament that his confidence going into the event was 100 per cent.

Organizers say the tournament drew strong community support, with the excitement from the final matches attracting spectators throughout the Big Marble Go Centre.

Rick Engel, president of Sepak Takraw Canada, said the association was pleased with the community response, with players and directors unanimously voting at their annual general meeting to bring the championship back to Medicine Hat in 2027.

The 2027 championship will be held in Medicine Hat the same weekend.

The tournament also provided an opportunity for players to earn consideration for Team Canada, with top performers eligible for selection to compete at the 2027 King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championships in Thailand, pending sufficient sponsorship.
