Prizes up for grabs for ‘Litter Blitz’ clean-up participants in Medicine Hat

A full week of efforts aimed at cleaning up litter and beautifying the city will begin Saturday as part of the City of Medicine Hat’s Litter Blitz.

The city is calling on organizations, schools, and all residents to take part in the initiative.

Jeff Quinlan, the city’s parks and recreation technician, said the city welcomes everyone to take part in cleaning up.

“We’re just asking people that are able to come on out and enjoy the day or enjoy the week as they can, picking up some of the garbage that’s accumulated over the winter,” he said.

Garbage bags, gloves, and other pick-up supplies are offered by the city at the Parks and Recreation office at 88 Kipling Street all season, through to the end of fall.

Supplies can also be found at the Police Point Park Interpretive Centre and the Big Marble Go Centre until May 3.

Participants also have the chance to win a one-night stay at a comfort cabin, or at a campsite in the Gas City Campground.

Other prizes include family day-passes to the Big Marble Go Centre.

Quinlan said the event will be involved with the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program’s Earth Day Bash taking place Saturday.

“They are going to have a multitude of vendors there, all talking about Earth Day themes, and the theme this year is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, he said.

“As a part of that, Parks and Recreation will have a presence there with our Litter Blitz campaign.”

Quinlan said the Litter Blitz around the city is sort of like a spring clean-up one might do in a home or yard.

He said it helps to see other people out cleaning alongside someone, to make participants feel less alone in their efforts.

“It gives you a sense of community, I think, when you’re out there on the trail and you see other people taking part as well,” he said.

“It’s fun. I mean, a lot of the time kids have fun, some of the things they find. And it definitely helps to create that sense that you’re not alone in the effort,” he added.

“We all live here in this beautiful city. We’re lucky to have the environment we have around us. And so let’s enjoy it and foster it well.”

Quinlan said it may be difficult to make time to participate, but as supplies are offered until the fall, cleaning can be done at any time.

The Litter Blitz campaign concludes with a Thank You BBQ on May 3, from 12 to 2 p.m. at Police Point Park.

The city invites those who take part of the clean-up, to recognize the hard work and community contributions of participants.
