Earth Day invites Medicine Hat to consider where our power comes from

Genevieve Mathieu, park interpreter with the Medicine Hat Interpretive Program, says this year’s theme of Earth Day is about inspiring everyone to take ownership of power consumption.

She said it’s easy to feel disempowered as an individual, feeling as if you can’t make a difference towards the environment.

“‘I’m just one person. What can I really do?’ And if everyone thinks that, it becomes true,” she said.

Every year, the Earth Day campaign aims to raise awareness across the country.

It encourages commitment to the environment — but taking care of the earth happens every day.

This year, the campaign invites Canadians to consider where our power comes from, and alternative sources of energy.

Mathieu said it seems hopeful that Medicine Hat is stepping in the direction of diversifying the city’s energy sources.

Mathieu said energy sources that have smaller environmental impact in the long run are the best to move forward with for the future of Medicine Hat.

Funding to research the cost and impact of building Saamis Solar Park was approved by the majority of Medicine Hat’s city council April 7, pushing the project to the next stage.

Staff will return in the fourth quarter of 2025 with a recommendation based on the analysis.

The decision does not mean the city is locked in with building the project.

On Saturday the Interpretive Program is hosting an Earth Day Bash, where Mathieu said people can understand our impacts on the environment as humans.

“The activity I’m hosting for our event is all about that. It’s about taking small actions to collectively have a greater impact,” Mathieu said.

“Here in Medicine Hat, finding other people with either similar ideas or people to pitch in and do a group effort together is practicing building solidarity,” she added.

“[It’s] feeling empowered to make bigger changes.”

The Earth Day campaign says each of us have a role to play in protecting the planet and everyone who lives on it.

Whether that be through joining an environmental activity in the community or donating to an organization — we can all make a positive impact for the earth.
