The Medicine Hat Public School Division has chosen to hire its temporary superintendent of schools as its permanent occupant.

Tracy Hensel will transition from acting superintendent — a role she took over in July when predecessor Mark Davidson left for British Columbia — to superintendent in January after confirmation by the board of trustees.

Catherine Wilson, chair of the Medicine Hat Public Board of Education, said officials were “delighted” to grant Hensel the promotion.

“Tracy demonstrates remarkable communication skills; her keen ability to forge and foster positive relationships has been instrumental in advancing the Division’s universal goals,” Wilson said in a released statement.

“Her collaborative leadership approach along with her commitment to equity, inclusion and student success align perfectly with the vision for the division.”

Hensel, who has worked at the public school division in a variety of roles over the last 36 years, worked closely with predecessor Davidson for seven years.

She’s looking forward to formally taking over.

“I am eager to build upon our strong foundation to create a bright future for the students we serve and the staff who guide them,” Hensel said.

“I am committed to working collaboratively with our board, dedicated staff, supportive parents, inspiring students and engaged community members to achieve our universal goals.”

Hensel will continue in her current role as acting superintendent until the official appointment takes effect on Jan. 1.
