The Medicine Hat Public School Division’s new acting superintendent Tracy Hensel will assume her role on July 1, a challenge she’s excited to take on.

The position is set to be held in the interim when it is vacated by current superintendent Mark Davidson.

Hensel has worked closely with Davidson over the last seven and a half years and is happy to have access to his expertise as she transitions to the new role.

“We work collectively as a team, our whole executive team, and that executive team will continue to do the work that we’ve been doing,” Hensel said.

“It is exciting to know that he’ll be around to run things past him for the next few months.”

The board of trustees are still deciding on the timeline and process to permanently fill the position.

Hensel has been with the Medicine Hat Public School Division in a variety of areas over the last 36 years, most recently as associate superintendent of student services.

“I’ve had all kinds of different roles. I started in Medicine Hat Public as a teacher and I went from a teacher to a vice principal, from a vice principal to a principal at a couple different schools, then to my current role,” Hensel said.

“This is a great opportunity to try something new,” she added.

With this being a new position to Hensel, she is looking forward to see what the challenges and opportunities are to determine if it’s something she wants to be considered for on a permanent basis.

Hensel knows there will be good support from the school division.

“We’re really lucky in Medicine Hat public. We have a great team of people all the way from facilities to our administrators that work in the schools, our classroom teachers and educational assistants,” Hensel said.

“It takes a team to do everything to serve our families. I feel like we have a great team here in Medicine Hat Public. I’m excited about the opportunity.”
