UPDATE 6:30 a.m. CST:

MAPLE CREEK, SK — SaskPower crews are dealing with impassable roads as they work to restore service to customers in southwestern Saskatchewan.

They were successful in getting the power back for some people in Maple Creek last night, mostly on the east and north side of the town.

Customers north of Maple Creek, including Golden Prairie may see their power back on by 8 p.m.

The utility says it could be 8 p.m. Friday before power returns to those south of Maple Creek.

Meanwhile, SaskTel says the power outage has resulted in loss of internet, wireless and landline services places like Burstall, Cypress Hill, Fox Valley, Golden Prairie and Richmound.

RCMP advise people in those area to go to their nearest detachment if they need service.

Earlier story follows.

MAPLE CREEK, SK – Power is expected to be restored in Maple Creek early Wednesday evening, about 40 hours after a winter storm damaged power poles and knocked down lines servicing the southwestern Saskatchewan town.

The latest update from the Town of Maple Creek says that power should be back on in the town at about 6 p.m. and that while crews continue to work to restore power to customers in the surrounding towns and rural areas, the potential exists for these customers to without power into Thursday.

On Wednesday, Deputy Mayor Len Barkman says the mood in the community is fairly positive following the Tuesday storm. He adds there’s a great team of people that have been out helping and keeping things under control.

“It’s been just great to see our community come together. It seems like at times when you have challenges thrown at you that the community comes together and helps out in ways that you see people helping and say oh that’s great,” he said. “There’s just been so many people come forward that are helping in so many ways to help get through this challenge that we’re facing so were really grateful for that and a great, great big thanks to our community for all that they’re doing to get through this.”

On Tuesday afternoon, the Town of Maple Creek set up a warming station at the Salvation Army Hall for those needing a place to sleep and food and water. Barkman says more than one hundred people have come through the warming station, and it’s been full at supper breakfast and lunch the past two days.

A mandatory water restriction is in place due to power being knocked out at the town’s water treatment plant, which the town hoped to have running again this afternoon.

Barkman says to check the SaskPower website or call 310-2220 for power updates and updates for the Town of Maple Creek can be found on the website and Facebook page.
