MEDICINE HAT, AB – A second case of COVID-19 at Medicine Hat High School this week has moved the school on outbreak status as defined by Alberta Health Services.

A COVID-19 outbreak within a school setting is defined by AHS as “two or more confirmed cases occur in a school within a 14 day period.”

Hat High announced a case of COVID-19 in the school on Nov. 11.

A positive case of the virus has also been identified Friday at Dr. Roy Wilson Learning Centre.

AHS letters posted by the Medicine Hat Public School Division for both Hat High and Roy Wilson say some students and staff have been directed to self-isolate for a specified period and that all close contacts of the positive cases have been identified and are already self-isolating.

“We are working closely with AHS to ensure necessary measures are in place to keep our entire school community safe. It appears that the exposure was limited to a small group of students and staff and we are confident, based on AHS guidance, that staff and students who have not been directed to isolate can attend school safely.”

Enhanced cleaning will be conducted before classes return on Monday. There are no classes this week.

The letters remind parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 and to complete the Alberta Daily Health Check each day prior to attending school.

“As a reminder, if your child has any symptoms of COVID-19 listed on the Alberta Health daily checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and keep them home,” they read.
