MEDICINE HAT — Two area schools are dealing with more positive test results for COVID-19.

An individual at Medicine Hat High School had a positive test result, but it appears exposure was limited to a small group of students and staff. They are being told to self-isolate and school custodians will conduct enhanced cleaning ahead of the resumption of classes on Monday.

“We are working closely with AHS to ensure necessary measures are in place to keep our entire school community safe,” states a letter from AHS shared by the school division. ”It appears that the exposure was limited to a small group of students and staff and we are confident, based on AHS guidance, that staff and students who have not been directed to isolate can attend school safely. Siblings and family members of close contacts are not required to self-isolate, however they are asked to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19.”

The letter reminds all parents/guardians of students, as well as any staff/visitors/volunteers to Medicine Hat High School to monitor for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19, and asks them to complete the Alberta Daily Health Check each day prior to attending school.

“Out of an abundance of caution, and as we continue our focus on preventing the spread of COVID-19, we have directed our custodial services team to conduct enhanced cleaning protocols prior to the resumption of classes next Monday. This additional cleaning will focus on areas where the individual was present along with high touch areas and surfaces throughout the school.”

Hat High had a positive case of COVID-19 in October.

As a reminder, if your child has any symptoms of COVID-19 listed on the Alberta Health Daily Checklist, please fill out the online Alberta Health Services COVID-19 self-assessment or call Health Link at 811 and keep them home. For more information about positive COVID-19 cases in school please read COVID-19 in Schools (k-12) setting.

The Prairie Rose School Division is also reporting a second positive case of COVID 19 connected to the Prairie Mennonite Alternative school in Medicine Hat, which places the school on Outbreak status.

The first case resulted in 100 students and 11 staff placed into quarantine and the school is closed until Nov. 20.

No additional quarantines resulted from the second positive result.
