MEDICINE HAT, AB – Drug busts, new stores and a mumps outbreak dominated the headlines in February. Here a few stories which resonated with our readers.

Feb. 2 – New retailers announced for Medicine Hat Mall. 

Following the announcement HMV Canada would be closing, the Medicine Hat Mall announced several new businesses would be setting up shop in the city.

Marshalls and Homesense were the first to be confirmed, and were followed by OshKosh B’Gosh, Mountain Warehouse and Sunrise Records.

The mall says once renovations are complete, approximately 20 new retailers will have opened in the mall. The renovations are scheduled to be finished by spring 2018. 

Feb. 9 CHAT News Today launches. 

CHAT News Today, an online portal powered by the CHAT Television newsroom, officially launched to the public at the Beveridge Building on Feb. 9.

Feb. 13 – Leonard Beaulieu arrested in Winnipeg.

Beaulieu, 25, was charged with second-degree murder alongside Luke Boxell in connection with the death of Jordan Pede on New Year’s Eve. Following a brief Canada-wide warrant, he was arrested in Winnipeg and extradited to Medicine Hat o face charges. Beaulieu has remained in custody since his arrest.

Feb. 22 – Mumps outbreak reported in Medicine Hat. 

Alberta Health Services reported an outbreak of mumps near the end of the month, with the outbreak in the zone originating with players from the Medicine Hat Tigers.

The outbreak resulted in several precautions being put in place in the WHL to limit the spread of infection, including reducing the amount of contact with fans.

The outbreak was ended in June. A total of 18 cases were discovered in the South Zone. 

Feb. 22 – Three men charged following two separate drug busts.

Medicine Hat police and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response team cracked down on street level dealing in February. Aaron Bodnaruk, MacKenzie Osgood and Taylor Weiss-linder were arrested and charged after police seized more than $30,000 worth of drugs and weapons.

Feb. 28 – Police find new ways to crack down on distracted drivers.

Medicine Hat police say distracted driving remains a problem in Medicine Hat, but are working to crack down on the practice.
