MEDICINE HAT, AB — Voters who won’t be able to cast their ballots on April 16 still have a chance to have their voices heard this week.

Advance polls open up on Tuesday, and run until Saturday, giving people a chance to vote before election day.

“Most people should have their where to vote that came in the mail last week or this week,” said Allan Bloomfield, the returning officer for the Cypress-Medicine Hat riding. “Bring that, it’s very important to have that. It speeds up the process.”

Bloomfield says if you don’t have the voter card, you need to bring identification and register at the polling station to confirm your identity. Photo identification with your current address, such as a driver’s licence, is required.

If you don’t have photo identification, you will need two pieces of identification with your name and current address. A list of acceptable identification can be found here.

Bloomfield says they’re expecting a busy week at the polls.

“Elections Alberta has received over 30,000 special ballots, which is people who won’t be here for election day, and that’s up,” he said. “We’re over 300 for us, for Cypress-Medicine Hat, and that’s doubled from 2015.”

Bloomfield adds they have 2,500 ballots ready for Cypress-Medicine Hat for the advance poll.

Albertans can vote at any advance poll in Alberta to cast ballots for candidates in their electoral division. Bloomfield says the returning office will print out a ballot with candidates in that electoral riding.
