MEDICINE HAT, AB — Curbside recycling began in Medicine Hat, a fire occurred at one of Redcliff’s biggest businesses, and Cirque du Soleil arrived in Medicine Hat for the first time.

Here are some of the biggest stories from May 2018.

May 8 – Residential recycling program begins. 

Approved in 2017, the city began rolling out its residential recycling bins in May, delivering more than 23,000 carts to city homes. Residents were able to use the carts immediately after they arrived, and the city says the program has been successful so far.

May 15 – Jessie Dyck pleads guilty to manslaughter. 

Dyck, charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of Tanya Campbell-Losier in 2016, received a 21 month sentence, but with time served, would onyl have to serve 19.5 months.

May 23 – Cirque du Soleil performs in Medicine Hat. 

The famed company brought “Crystal,” its first on-ice production, to the Canalta Centre, drawing huge crowds and generating a positive economic impact on the city.

May 24 – Fire destroys businesses in Light Industrial Area 

The building housing both Deadbolt Construction and Bamboo Innovations caught fire on May 24. Firefighters say the cause of the blaze could not be determined. 

May 26- Fire at RedHat Co-op 

A fire broke out at the facility in Redcliff vegetable processing facility, which sent one person to hospital with minor injuries. Producers stepped up to help support the building during the busy processing season. The building returned to regular operations in June.

May 29 – CP Rail goes on strike 

For the third time since 2012, Canadian Pacific Rail Workers walked off the job. The strike, which lasted one day, saw approximately 300 workers in Medicine Hat hit the picket line. Worker fatigue and the company’s disciplinary policy were the two biggest issues.
