CP Rail employees go on strike

May 29, 2018 | 8:47 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Railway workers across the country are officially on strike.

More than 3,000 conductors and engineers with Canadian Pacific Railway walked off the job at 8 p.m. Tuesday night after negotiations for a new contract failed.

A separate agreement has been reached between the company and the union representing signal workers.

The strike involves approximately 300 workers in Medicine Hat.

Several employees can be seen on the picket line in front of the CP Rail Station on North Railway Street. The employees can be seen marching and carrying signs.

All work in the railyard has come to a halt.

Teamsters Canada, which represents conductors and engineers, say they plan to continue to negotiate with CP Rail to reach an agreement.

The union says worker fatigue and the disciplinary policy of CP are the biggest issues on the table.

The strike is the third CP rail strike since 2012.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday the federal government will not be rushed into introducing back-to-work legislation. Federal mediators have been working to help both sides reach a settlement.
