RED DEER, AB – Medicine Hat speed skater Joshua Hathaway can call himself a national gold medallist, helping Alberta to a first place finish in team pursuit at the 2019 Canada Winter Games.

Hathaway and his three teammates in Paul Coderre, Max Halyk, and Kaleb Muller skated to a time of 4:05.41 on Sunday, picking up a gold medal over Quebec and Ontario.

It’s Hathaway’s first medal of the Canada Winter Games and is the third gold medal overall for Team Alberta.

On Saturday, Hathaway competed in the 1,500 metre event and picked up an eighth place finish with a time of 2:04.37.

Before his gold medal win, Hathaway also raced twice in the 500 metre event on Sunday with a combined time of 1:19.99 for a 15th place national finish.

No events scheduled for the 19-year-old on Monday, while his next notable race comes on Tuesday morning in the 5,000 metre long track discipline.

Two local boxers will begin their quest for gold on Sunday night, with Medicine Hat Boxing Club members Janick Lacroix and Tristan Deveau both in preliminary action.

Lacroix, the reigning national junior champion, will open up his week with a bout against Newfoundland & Labrador’s James Steven Thorne in the 75 kilogram division.

As for Deveau, he will do battle in the 69 kilogram weight class against Dylan Clark out of British Columbia.

At the time of publishing, Team Alberta sits second in the overall medal tally with four golds, five silvers, and one bronze medal for 10 medals in total.
