Medicine Hat crews to remove 12 dying trees from Veterans’ Memorial Park

The City of Medicine Hat is removing 12 dead or dying trees from Riverside Veterans’ Memorial Park this week because they pose potential hazards.

The trees are located at various points throughout the park and were identified as being in poor health or condition.

Crews have begun removing the trees, with work expected to continue beyond the Thanksgiving long weekend, and residents are asked to avoid active work areas.

The removals are part of the city’s efforts to maintain a safe and healthy urban forest, with more than 12 trees to be planted in the park in spring 2027 through the city’s Urban Canopy Enhancement Initiative.

Funding for the planting comes through the ongoing Growing Canada’s Community Canopies grant program and will help expand the park’s urban forest and enhance biodiversity.

The city says the loss of mature trees is not taken lightly, but removing unhealthy trees proactively can help reduce potential hazards and support the long-term health of the urban forest.
