Brooks RCMP deal with impaired driver, alleged weapon incident on Thursday

Brooks RCMP dealt with an impaired driving arrest and a separate report involving a man allegedly handling a weapon in two incidents on Oct. 1.

At about 6:43 p.m., a City of Brooks peace officer stopped a vehicle on Cassils Road after observing it travelling 91 kilometres per hour.

Mounties say the peace officer detected a strong odour of alcohol while speaking with the driver and requested assistance from police.

An RCMP officer conducted a roadside alcohol screening test, which registered a fail, and the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

Police say the driver repeatedly refused directions to exit the vehicle. Additional officers attended and removed the driver from the vehicle before taking them into custody.

The driver received charges and sanctions for speeding, careless driving, obstructing or resisting a peace officer and impaired operation of a motor vehicle, according to RCMP.

The impaired-driving investigation resulted in a 90-day driver’s licence suspension, a 30-day vehicle seizure and a $1,200 fine.

The driver was taken to Brooks RCMP cells and released once sober.

Later that evening, at about 7:34 p.m., officers responded to a report of an aggressive man in an alley behind the Newell Hotel.

Police located a man known to them and initially arrested him in connection with an allegation of assault with a weapon.

During a search following the arrest, officers found unstamped cigarettes, a BB gun and a substance believed to be methamphetamine, RCMP said.

Police later spoke with the complainant, who said she had parked behind the hotel and observed two men.

She took a photograph of them before she got out of her vehicle.

Mounties said that one of the men picked up a metal rod and began twirling it.

The complainant recorded the interaction and questioned the man about his actions before he ran from the area.

The complainant told police she did not want to proceed with charges related to the incident.

The man was subsequently arrested for public intoxication and fined for possession of unstamped cigarettes.

RCMP say the investigation has concluded.
