As Province recognizes Older Persons Day, Friends of Medicare call for better standards

Oct 1, 2026 | 10:12 AM

October 1st is the International Day of Older Persons and Alberta’s Assisted Living minister calls seniors the foundation of our province.

In a statement, Nathan Neudorf added they helped build the Alberta we know and love today, and have shaped communities we call home.

The Lethbridge East MLA continued by saying seniors continue to give back through volunteer service, caregiving, mentorship, and leadership.

Almost 900,000 seniors currently live in Wildrose Country with projections of more than one million by the year 2034.

But, as the Province recognizes the day, the group, Friends of Medicare is renewing calls for improvements to continuing and home care.

Executive director Chris Gallaway, in a release, said seniors in Alberta deserve so much better than what they’re getting now.

In his words, if our government truly wanted to celebrate older persons, they would be doing more than putting out a statement once a year.

The organization has been lobbying the Province to adopt national long-term care standards and bring back the office of Senior Advocate.
