Medicine Hat College Rattlers golf teams capture mixed ACAC title, send seven to Nationals

“You have a couple of really strong guys and a couple of really strong girls. That’s why we were able to win that side of things.”

Four Rattlers golfers finished in the top three of their divisions.

On the men’s side, Cash Welk finished three rounds tied for top spot with SAIT’s Aidan Flynn at 17-over par, and 230 strokes.

A playoff saw them replay the par-five 18th hole three times.

Both shot par in the first playoff, with Welk missing a three-foot birdie putt for the win. On the second playoff, both birdied the hole. On the third playoff hole, Flynn shot a par, and Welk a double bogey.

This left Welk with a second-place finish.

Head Coach Dillon Batsel said he was impressed by Welk’s second-round 3-over-par 71 in less than ideal weather.

“What makes Cash’s round even more impressive is to shoot the low round of the day, to propel him into a position to have a chance to win the tournament on the last day. That was awesome of him,” Batsel said.

“Great round. Probably one of his better rounds that he’s played given the conditions.”

The Rattler’s Wyatt Bishop was only two strokes behind Welk and Flynn with 19-over par and tied SAIT’s Carson Rody.

On the women’s side, Kiara Reesor and Rebecca Armstrong tied for second, both shooting a 60-over par 273 over the three rounds.

They finished eight strokes behind NAIT’s Ella Dolan.

By finishing in the top six, both Rattlers’ ladies will head to Nationals.

A third-place finish for the Rattlers men’s team allows the College to send five men to Nationals.

Head Coach Batsel will decide on those representatives; however, Welk and Bishop are expected to fill two of those positions.

The national tournament runs Oct. 12-16 in Montreal.

Batsel credits assistant coach Ryan Hodgins for his work with the team throughout the tournament.

Several other Rattlers golfers competed at the ACAC tournament.

On the men’s side, Hayden King was 19th at 41-over par; Jaxson Magus tied for 28th at 57-over par; David Shott tied for 36th at 67-over par; and Everett Liefso finished 39th at 71-over par.

On the women’s side, Ava Bratvold placed eighth at 77-over par, and Zoe Hodgson finished 10th at 92-over par.
