Brooks Bandits sign Spurgeon, son of longtime NHL captain for 2026-27 season

The Brooks Bandits have added a familiar hockey name to their roster, signing 16-year-old defenceman Zachary Spurgeon for the 2026-27 BCHL season.

Spurgeon, a 2009-born blueliner, played last season with Northstar Christian Academy in Alexandria, Minn., where he was a standout defenceman.

He is known for his speed, hockey IQ and ability to move the puck efficiently.

Spurgeon is the son of current and longtime Minnesota Wild captain Jared Spurgeon, who has spent his entire 16-year NHL career with the Wild.

Bandits general manager Wayne Labrie said the younger Spurgeon brings significant potential to the organization and fits with the team’s culture.

“We’re extremely excited to welcome Zachary and the Spurgeon family to our organization,” Labrie said in a release.

“Zachary is a young, high-end talent who brings tremendous upside to our group.”

Spurgeon had several options for where to begin his junior hockey career before choosing Brooks.

The Bandits said the decision was based on the organization’s track record of individual player development, commitment to education and pathway to NCAA hockey.

Labrie said the BCHL’s move toward independence and focus on player development gives hockey families more choice when deciding where a young player should begin his junior career.

The Bandits said Spurgeon and his family will join the organization for the upcoming season.
