MHC Rattlers to receive awards recognizing leadership beyond sport

Medicine Hat College student-athletes will receive new recognition for contributions beyond the playing surface through a five-year commitment from the Western Communities Foundation.

The foundation has committed $10,000 to establish two Western Communities Foundation Athlete Leaders Awards at the college: one $1,000 award for a male athlete and one for a female athlete each year.

The awards will recognize student-athletes who demonstrate leadership, resilience, character and community involvement, with athletic achievement being only one part of the criteria.

“Student-athletes demonstrate qualities such as resilience, discipline, teamwork, perseverance and accountability every day,” said Rod Cunniam, board chair of the Western Communities Foundation.

“Those are qualities that help build stronger communities and future leaders.”

The foundation selected Medicine Hat College as a partner based on its connection to the region and its focus on developing future leaders.

Since 2009, the Western Communities Foundation has invested more than $51,000 in Medicine Hat through grants, donations and student-focused initiatives.

Terry Ballard, manager of athletics and recreation at Medicine Hat College, said the awards reflect the college’s focus on developing students both on and off the field.

“Rattler athletes are leaders, role models and ambassadors for the college,” Ballard said.

He said the college’s athletics program focuses on academics, athletics, citizenship and leadership.

“These awards recognize and celebrate those values while supporting students who are making a positive impact on campus and in the community,” Ballard said.

The first Western Communities Foundation Athlete Leaders Awards will be presented during the 2026-27 academic year.
