Prescribed fires to take place at Canadian Forces Base Suffield

Sep 14, 2026 | 10:31 AM

Prescribed fires are planned at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Suffield’s National Wildlife Area from Sept. 15 to 20 to maintain prairie ecosystems and support at-risk species.

CFB Suffield and Environment Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service will conduct the controlled burns when weather conditions are suitable.

Residents near the base may see smoke from a distance and increased emergency vehicle activity while the fire operations are underway, with no anticipated impact to daily activities outside the base perimeter.

Fire suppression resources will be on scene throughout the operation, with multiple measures in place to help manage the fires.

The prescribed burns are intended to maintain fire-dependent prairie ecosystems and support species at risk, including the Ord’s Kangaroo Rat.

The range and training area will remain a controlled-access zone, and unauthorized entry is prohibited.

Anyone with concerns can contact CFB Suffield Range Control at 403-544-4310 or their nearest fire service.
