Medicine Hat police warn of school-related social media trend

Police are urging community members not to share unverified information, rumours or screenshots online, saying doing so can contribute to unnecessary anxiety.

Anyone who encounters a concerning post, message, image or behaviour involving students or schools is being asked to preserve the information, if it is safe to do so, and report it directly to school administration or police.

That could include taking a screenshot or recording the account name, date, time and platform where the content appeared.

MHPS also says it is aware of reports that some individuals may be taking the online trend further by wearing costumes and approaching or following students.

Police say that behaviour is concerning and should be reported immediately.

Anyone who witnesses behaviour that creates an immediate safety concern should call 911.

Non-emergency information can be reported to MHPS at 403-529-8481.

Police are also encouraging parents and caregivers to speak with children about personal safety, including reporting suspicious behaviour to a trusted adult and avoiding the spread of unverified information online.

MHPS says its priority is maintaining the safety of students, staff and the broader community while ensuring concerns are properly assessed.
