A community fundraiser has surpassed expectations, raising $179,083 for the Root Cellar Food and Wellness Hub through this year’s Amazing Race for Hunger.

The annual event brought 20 teams together for a day of competition and fundraising, with organizers setting an ambitious goal of more than $167,000.

Reaching over $179,000 meant the fundraiser also crossed a significant five-year milestone.

“We set a big goal this year,” Root Cellar executive director Melissa Mullis said.

“The reason that we wanted to do that was so that we would hit $500,000 in the fifth year — and we did.”

Mullis said the emphasis on reaching the milestone helped motivate participants.

Teams also pushed each other through friendly competition, with several teams approaching $20,000 in fundraising.

The competitive spirit continued throughout race day, as participants completed challenges while vying for the top spot.

“I have never met more competitive people in my life,” Mullis said.

The Halestorm team ultimately crossed the finish line first.

The team, made up of Brock and Troy Hale, had participated in the race for four years and narrowly missed winning in previous attempts.

“It was a real Cinderella story,” Mullis said.

“Everybody was just ecstatic to see them succeed.”

Each team paid an entry fee, with $4,000 set aside as the main prize, and additional prizes donated by local businesses.

Beyond the competition, the fundraiser provides an important boost to the Root Cellar’s emergency food program, helping ensure food support is available to people who need it.

Mullis said the event’s appeal also comes from bringing people from different walks of life together and giving them a different way to experience the community while supporting a local charity.

“The community came together for us, and we couldn’t be more grateful,” Mullis said.

The competition was livestreamed on YouTube and is still available to view. Hosting the broadcast were Mullis and MY96 morning host Hudson.

The Root Cellar is also preparing for several upcoming fundraisers, including three garden dinners on Sept. 3, 11 and 19, as well as a Brown Bag Lunch Day with Wild 94.5 on Sept. 10 at the Co-op on 13th Avenue.

Proceeds from the Brown Bag Lunch Day will help provide food for children in the community.
