A 54-year-old Medicine Hat man is facing charges following an armed robbery at a liquor store in southeast Medicine Hat on Tuesday.

Officers with the Medicine Hat Police Service said they were called to the business shortly after 11 a.m. after an employee reported a man had entered the store, selected several items, produced a weapon and demanded cash from the register.

The suspect left the business on foot, and the employee immediately contacted police.

Police obtained a detailed description and, within minutes, located a man who matched it in a nearby park.

The man has been taken into custody, with no injuries reported for himself, police officers or members of the public.

According to police, a search following the arrest turned up the weapon believed to have been used in the robbery.

Investigators also recovered evidence in the area where the suspect was arrested that they believe is connected to the incident.

Paul Holland of Medicine Hat has been charged with robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Holland was held for a judicial interim release hearing and was remanded into custody, while scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 3.
