Medicine Hat drag racing track project faces unexpected costs as resurfacing continues

A major resurfacing project at the Medicine Hat drag racing track has uncovered an unexpected challenge beneath the track, adding to the cost of a project already being funded through donations, grants and community support.

President Dave Toth shared the news on social media.

He said crews discovered the existing base beneath the right lane was largely mud and dirt after removing about 35-year-old concrete.

“We had to come up with a plan and how much more funds it was going to take,” Toth said in the statement.

“We ended up removing 2 feet and putting in proper base material. This project has become somewhat over budget due to the base,” he added.

“The right lane is getting close to done, and on Friday the concrete will be coming out of the left, and if all goes to plan, we will be getting ready for concrete by the end of the month.”

The project has received financial support from several sources, including donations through GoFundMe and direct transfers, as well as funding from the Alberta government and the City of Medicine Hat.

Toth also thanked several individuals involved with the project in varying capacities.

A sign recognizing donors and supporters is planned for the spring.

While the immediate focus is completing the concrete work, Toth said fundraising will continue because additional work is still needed on the remaining asphalt.

The organization is also seeking businesses interested in becoming marketing partners with the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association (MHDRA), including opportunities for name branding at the facility.
