Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for most of Alberta, including Medicine Hat

Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for parts of Alberta, including the Medicine Hat area, on Wednesday morning.

They warn that conditions are favourable for dangerous storms capable of producing damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rain.

The weather agency says severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across the southeast region this afternoon and evening.

The agency warns strong wind gusts could damage trees, buildings and soft shelters. Large hail may also cause significant property damage and injuries. Heavy rainfall could also lead to localized flash flooding and sharply reduced visibility on area roadways.

Environment Canada says local power outages are also possible as storms move through the province.

Officials remind residents to seek shelter immediately if thunderstorms approach.

Motorists are urged to slow down if they encounter heavy rain and avoid driving through flooded roadways.

A Tornado Watch was put in place Wednesday morning for areas to the west of Edmonton.

Forecasters say some storms could become severe enough to produce tornadoes.

Environment Canada is advising Albertans to continue monitoring forecasts and weather alerts as conditions evolve.
