Cypress County athletes returned from the Southern Alberta Summer Games with at least 24 medals, highlighted by seven gold medals, 12 silver and three bronze.

The Southern Alberta Summer Games were hosted this year in the County of Forty Mile, primarily in Bow Island.

First held in 1970, the games are the longest-running annual multi-sport Games in Alberta, with the event bringing together more than 2,000 athletes of all ages and skill levels from 13 regions across southern Alberta to compete in more than 20 sporting and cultural events.

County officials said badminton results were still unavailable when the overall medal count was announced, with the team’s total having a chance to increase.

Regional director Melissa Strobel said the games were about more than competition, with athletes encouraging one another throughout the weekend.

Strobel said the Games fostered a positive, supportive atmosphere, with experienced athletes helping newcomers and emphasizing participation.

The county earned gold medals across several sports, including the three-kilometre run, beach volleyball, cornhole and track and field.

Leonie Kuipers captured gold in the women’s three-kilometre run before teaming with Treslie Phillips to win gold in the 14-17 cornhole event.

Phillips also added an individual silver in the three-kilometre run.

In beach volleyball, Cypress County claimed gold in the 14-16 co-ed division with Maddy, Ryder, Zander and Sasha, while Bentley and Sydney won the 14-16 girls division. Jayde and Allia earned bronze in the same division, while Rory and John took silver in the men’s 17-and-over competition.

Track and field produced the largest share of the county’s medals, led by Kyrsen Lafferty, who won gold in the girls’ 10-11 100-metre and 200-metre races, while adding silver in the long jump and bronze in the high jump.

Everleigh Fischer earned silver in the girls 10-11 100-metre, 200-metre and 400-metre races, while Ashlynn Lafferty took silver in the girls 7-9 high jump.

Emma Pimblett won silver in both the girls’ 16-17 long jump and triple jump. Tobi Pimblett collected one gold and two silver medals in the women’s 55-and-over sprint events, winning the 50 metres and finishing second in both the 100 and 200.

Elsewhere, Kinzie Shigehiro earned silver in the girls 13-55 golf division, while Linda Carter claimed bronze in darts.

Cypress County officials thanked volunteers and organizers for the event and said they are looking forward to learning where the 2027 Games will be held.
