Public engagement begins as City of Medicine Hat explores Urban Hens Pilot Program

May 19, 2026 | 10:17 AM

The City of Medicine Hat has begun public engagement as they explore the development of a two-year Urban Hens Pilot Program.

They have launched an Urban Hens project page and a public survey on their Shape Your City webpage.

The background information section on the project page will give residents insight before taking the survey.

“Public input is a vital part of this process, helping to ensure that a range of community perspectives and experiences are considered,” the City’s Acting Director of Parks and Recreation, Scott Richter, said in a statement.

“We encourage residents to learn more about the proposed Urban Hens Pilot Program and share their feedback, as it will play an important role in informing the bylaw development and Council’s future decision-making.”

The survey is open until Friday, June 26, 2026.

Council approved a motion directing City administration to prepare draft regulations and a report outlining anticipated costs and staffing requirements at a meeting on April 7.

The expectation is that both documents will return to the Council for consideration in the third quarter of 2026.
