Planning for a potential new recreational facility has begun in Cypress County

Cypress County Council has directed administration to begin preliminary planning for a potential new recreational facility in Dunmore Junction, a move officials say is aimed at supporting long-term growth and modernizing local infrastructure.

The proposed concept may include twin sheets of ice and up to six sheets of curling ice, as staff have been directed to prepare a conceptual plan, a site plan, and a high-level budget estimate for the council’s consideration.

Cypress County Mayor Dan Hamilton said the decision reflects a forward-looking approach to recreation planning in the region.

Hamilton said council is taking a thoughtful, long-term approach to planning, recognizing the importance of recreation facilities and the opportunity to explore a modern solution that supports regional growth.

Council said the initiative aligns with its focus on long-term asset management and assessing whether a new facility in Dunmore Junction could deliver greater value for residents while supporting economic development.

As part of the plan, the Irvine Sports Complex will continue operating at its current service levels until any transition to a new facility is complete.

Administration has also been directed to undertake community engagement on the future of recreational programming at the complex and return with recommendations.

Cody Millington, president of the Irvine and District Agricultural Society, said the approach balances investment in new infrastructure with maintaining existing community assets.

Millington said in a statement that the approach delivers, “A dedicated new ice facility while preserving the Irvine Sports Complex, represents a thoughtful and sustainable way to meet the diverse recreational needs of families, youth, athletes, and curlers across Cypress County.”

The county also acknowledged the Irvine Agricultural Society for more than 40 years of stewardship of the Irvine Sports Complex and said it remains committed to exploring continued recreational opportunities in Irvine as planning progresses.
