Sylvan Lake Gulls advance to WCBL Championship, will face Red Sox

For the first time in franchise history, the Sylvan Lake Gulls are headed to the Western Canadian Baseball League Championship series.

They advanced on Monday night after defeating the Okotoks Dawgs 8-4 in Game 2 of the West Division Final at Gulls stadium.

Sylvan Lake swept the series after they came out on top 7-3 in Game 1 on Sunday.

The series victory is significant because the Gulls previously lost the West Division Final to the Dawgs in each of the last three seasons. Okotoks has gone on to win the WCBL title the last three years.

Next up, the Gulls will face the winner of the East Division Final, the Regina Red Sox who won a series deciding Game 3 in Saskatoon 6-2 on Tuesday night over the Berries.

The Red Sox had swept the Medicine Hat Mavericks in the first round.

The Gulls had the stronger regular season record heading into the series at 36-20 to finish second in West Division in the regular season.

An underdog Red Sox team finished third in the East Division during the regular season with a 29-27 record, before knocking off the second seed Mavs, and the leagues top regular season team in the Berries who were 46-9 coming into the playoffs.

Playoff success had been a thing of the past for the Red Sox.

Prior to this season Regina had not won a playoff contest since 2019, with an 8 game post-season losing streak going into the 2025 playoffs.

The Red Sox last played in the WCBL championship in 2019, where they lost to the Okotoks Dawgs.

Regina’s last title came in 2012 when the league was still the Western Major Baseball League. The win was the Red Sox second title in a row after winning for the first time in 2011.

Squaring off only twice during the regular season the Red Sox defeated the Gulls in both meetings in Regina.

The June 21 contest an 8-0 shutout for the Red Sox, and the June 22 game a close 4-3 win for Regina.

The series will take place on Thursday in Regina at 6:01 p.m. for game one and back in Sylvan Lake Friday at 7:05 p.m.

If needed, Game 3 will also by place in Sylvan Lake on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
