The Medicine Hat Minor AAA Mavs baseball team placed second at prairie provincials on Monday.

The team was ranked in the bottom half of the nine teams competing at the tournament in Lethbridge over the weekend, but finished above those expectations.

Coach Corey McCrae said they are a deep team that kept improving all summer and peaked at the right time.

“One through 12 in the line up contributed with big hits and we played great defense the majority of the weekend,” McCrae said.

“We were the surprise of the tournament, going 3-0-1 in pool play, upsetting Foothills in the semis 6-5, before earning silver with a 9-3 loss in the championship game to Lethbridge.”

McCrae said the most memorable moment of the tournament was giving the host Lethbridge their only loss earlier in the tournament.

“We beat them 6-4 during pool play. It was an absolutely dominant performance from Kemp Baron, who threw 4 innings of superb pitching to go along with 3 hits to earn player of the game honours,” McCrae said.

“Torin Kanewischer came in to close out the game and earn the save.”

In the semifinals against Foothills, McCrae said that Emmanuel Recio was dominant on the mound falling two outs short of a complete game shutout.

“Foothills pushed hard in the 6th inning coming within one run and had the bases loaded before Cage Petryshyn got their number three hitter to pop out on a great catch by Jayden McCrea in foul territory against the fence at first base to end the game,” McCrea said.

Owen Maser was the Mavs starting pitcher for the final game against Lethbridge, but the Mavs couldn’t duplicate their pool play performance against the host in the final game.

McCrae was proud of the teams growth through the season.

“To see where we started and where we ended up I couldn’t be more proud of the boys,” McCrae said.

“They showed up with focus and compete and played their best when it mattered the most.”
