City of Medicine Hat receives award for 2025-26 budget document

Jul 30, 2025 | 9:55 AM

The City of Medicine Hat announced it is the recipient of the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2025-2026 budget document.

The third consecutive budget term the city has earned the award, having previously won for 2019-2022 and 2023-2024 budget documents.

The award is given to local governments as encouragement to prepare high quality budget documents reflecting guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on state and local budgeting and the GFOA’s best practices.

Recognition is earned through budget documents meeting program criteria and excelling as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool.

“This achievement continues to demonstrate our organization’s dedication to excellence in financial planning and reporting,” said Jilian Campbell, chief financial officer and managing director of corporate services with the city.

“It’s a reflection of the ongoing efforts of our staff to uphold the highest standards of transparency and accountability,” she added.

“We hope this recognition reassures the community of our commitment to clear, accessible, and responsible financial stewardship.”

Public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada have been represented by the GFOA since 1906.

The city said the reports are judged by an impartial Canadian Review Committee to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” designed to clearly communicate the municipality’s financial story and to motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.
