Medicine Hat Mavericks win first game of road trip

Jul 2, 2025 | 8:06 AM

The Medicine Hat Mavericks came out on top in a close 3-2 battle with the Sylvan Lake Gulls in the first of six straight games away from Athletic Park.

A two run first inning for the Mavs gave them a lead they would never relinquish in the Canada Day contest.

An Aaron Vulcano double drove in Jeremy Freeman Jr for the Mavs first run of the game, while a Carter Roth single brought Vulcano home.

Adam Vulcano lead off the second inning with a single, before advancing to third base over the next few batters, he would head home on a wild pitch to give the Mavs a 3-0 lead.

The Gulls scored a pair in the bottom of the second, but that would be as close as they would get with no runs the rest of the way.

Danny Retzlaff got the win for the Mavs, pitching 4.2 innings while giving up five hits and two earned runs.

Xander Roberts shut down the Gulls the rest of the way pitching 4.1 innings of scoreless baseball while giving up one hit.

The Mavericks are back in action in Sylvan Lake against the Gulls on Wednesday night.

A road trip up to Fort McMurray for a pair of games Thursday and Friday against the Giants is followed up with stop in Spruce Grove for two games against the Energy City Cactus Rats.

The Mavs return to Athletic Park on Tuesday, July 8 to host the Weyburn Beavers as they kick off a seven game home stand that includes a pair of rescheduled games from June.

The Western Canadian Baseball League power rankings from Monday have the Mavs dropping down one spot to third.

Twenty eight games into the season the Mavs sit in second in the East Division with an 18-10 record, six games back of the Saskatoon Berries for first.
