Fireworks returning to Kin Coulee Park for Canada Day, volunteers needed

The Medicine Hat Canada Day Festival — and the fireworks that go with it — will return to Kin Coulee Park for another year.

Last year, fireworks took place in Kin Coulee the day before.

The two-day festival will again start on June 30 with the Glow Up the Globe cultural experience from 5 p.m to 11 p.m.

That will include a variety of cultural activities, global music and food, concluding with an evening dance party.

Then on July 1, organizers are planning a full day of events, activities, sports, music, entertainment and vendors.

The Beat the Heat Skate Competition is back for another year, too.

A free pancake breakfast will take place at 9 a.m. on Canada Day, along with a variety of other activities.

Canada Day Society organizer Yusuf Mohammed, who is also director of the Connection Intercultural Association of Medicine Hat, said the new approach to Canada allows them to have more representation of people that live in our community.

“We’re excited about that because people are showing up and excited to contribute to this community, but also showcase their talent and their culture and wanting to be involved in Medicine Hat more and more,” Mohammed said.

“It’s all about creating a party that everybody feels like they’re a part of,” he added.

“It’s all about bringing this community together.”

Davie James, another organizer, said this year’s event is expanded by a variety of groups from the community coming together.

But there is still room for growth, he explained.

“We want everyone in the city to be involved with Canada Day,” James said.

“This is not exclusive to anyone. This is literally inclusivity. The theme is absolutely inclusivity, and we want to give people a platform to show off what they’re all about,” he added.

“That includes having vendors out, all kinds of different businesses, different community groups, if they want to come have a booth or do some sorts of kids’ activities.”

The group is still looking about 100 volunteers to help with the day. For more information on how to get involved, visit canadadaymedicinehat.ca.
