New disc golf course set to open in Medicine Hat

Apr 10, 2025 | 5:16 PM

A brand new disc golf course is opening up in Medicine Hat.

It is being installed at with nine holes on the Medicine Hat College campus and nine holes in Kin Coulee Park.

Work will start with construction zones set up first at Kin Coulee on Tuesday, with an expectation of completion there by the end of next week, weather permitting.

Installation at the front entrance area of the college near Coulee Ridge Residence is expected to be completed before the end of April.

The course was originally an idea brought forward to the Students’ Association of Medicine Hat College by a member of the Medicine Hat Disc Golf Club a few years prior.

Executive director of the Student’s Association Rebeca Rothfus said it was something their council agreed to financially support.

“We’ve had many iterations of what the course could look like. Unfortunately, due to some other constraints, and with the nesting of the geese, some areas, we weren’t able to utilize the whole campus,” Rothfus said.

“Then we approached the city to see if there’s a possibility of doing nine up here and nine in Kin Coulee. Then it could potentially still be an 18-hole course.”

The City of Medicine Hat approved the construction of the course in September.

Rothfus said they are proud to have collaborated with their community partners to bring this disc golf course to life on campus.

“It’s a great way for students and community members to stay active, connect with others, and enjoy the outdoors,” Rothfus said.

It’s a great way for students and community members to stay active, connect with each other, and enjoy the outdoors. The project reflects our commitment to creating a welcoming, wellness-focused campus for everyone,” she said.

“A big thank you to Medicine Hat College and City of Medicine Hat for helping us bring this project to fruition, and the Medicine Hat Disc Golf Association for their input on the course development.”

The cities manager of asset planning and business services Jamie McLeod said in a statment, this collaboration is the epitome of the city’s vision with the Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

“Parks and recreation are essential to a high quality of life, community health and well-being,” McLeod said.

“Medicine Hat is stronger when the City, non-profit, and public sectors work together to maximize these offerings,” he said.

“Our city’s disc gold courses are woven seamlessly into each park space, bridging the beauty of the scenery with the functionality of a high-quality course. We’re excited for our latest disc golf course to continue this trend.”
