A sports-themed room has opened in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital‘s pediatric unit.

It came about through the PJ’s for a Purpose fundraiser by students in the sport and event marketing and management programs at Medicine Hat College.

The students raised over double its $5,000 minimum goal to get the room built.

Students and those at businesses in the community, also helped raise funds by paying $5 to wear their pajamas for a day in February.

College student Jordan Hieb said they are thankful for all the support they received.

“Thanks to the community for really helping us…exceed our expectations,” Hieb said.

“Being born in Medicine Hat, it’s such a great feeling to contribute to such a scary place and trying to make the experiences memorable and optimistic as possible.”

This is the second year college students have helped the Medicine Hat Health Foundation with the initiative, with a video game station for the hospital fundraised last year.

This years the room has a variety of sports showcased.

Michelle Haukeness, events and community coordinator for the Medicine Hat Health Foundation, said the room is already very popular and utilized daily.

“It really creates distraction for the kids and they get to go in there and the nurses have something to talk about the kids with,” Haukeness said.

“The kids have something to talk to both their parents, the nurses, or the doctors and everyone that’s popping in to see them. It makes a nice little distraction for them and it just lights their eyes up to see the room,” she added.

“You should see the nurses all excited about the room, something finally new and shiny there.”

The initiative is expected to continue annually to help make the hospital more inviting for children who need to stay there.
