Big Marble Farms Inc. applies to supply excess power to Medicine Hat’s grid

Big Marble Farms Inc., located just outside Medicine Hat’s municipal boundary, has applied to become the first under new rules that allow businesses to provide excess power to the city’s grid.

Details are at this point scarce as the company goes through the Alberta Utilities Commission application process.

However, the city’s energy analysis and business marketing director Travis Tuchscherer said Monday the arrangement should benefit all involved.

“Any counterpart that we do this with, we look for win-wins with the customer,” Tuchscherer told CHAT News.

“If it works for them to supply the electricity and it allows us to take power when we need it…it may work out beneficial for both parties.”

As part of an ongoing modernization of its electricity grid, the Alberta government formalized the ability of electricity self-suppliers to sell excess power, he said.

“This just allows a self-supplier of electricity, typically over five megawatts that, if there’s times that they aren’t using the electricity, they can now put it onto our grid,” Tuchscherer explained.

He added the new rules also clear up some ambiguity that existed before.

City council last year passed a new electricity bylaw that allows for large-scale customers to supply power to the grid via their own generation.

The interconnection application to the AUC only has one submission: a letter of support from Big Marble Farms.
