‘PJs for a Purpose’ aims to create a sports-themed room at Medicine Hat’s hospital

An initiative to create a sports-themed room at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital‘s pediatric unit is underway with PJs for a Purpose — which will allow participants to wear their bedtime attire to work or school on Friday.

It’s led again this year by students in the sport and event marketing and management program at Medicine Hat College.

Student Jordan Hieb said their goal is to raise $5,000 by the end of the day Sunday.

“Being born and raised here too, especially, it means a lot actually getting to give back to the community,” Hieb said.

“Create a space where children have to experience a warm and safe environment when it’s a very scary experience.”

On this Friday, students are asking local businesses and schools to help raise $5 for each person who wears pajamas to their workplace.

It’s the second year the event has run in conjunction with the Medicine Hat Health Foundation, with a video game station fundraised for the hospital last year.

Student Hailey Gray said it’s a good feeling to support this cause.

“You feel like you’re making a difference and we have great relationships with our cohort and the first year students,” Gray said.

“I think it’s really meaningful to do this and then hopefully continue the tradition.”

The Rattlers basketball game on Friday at the college’s snake pit will also have a silent auction for signed basketballs and jerseys to help fundraise.

The women’s game will be underway at 6 p.m. with the men at 8 p.m.

All donations are welcomed, and can be done online as well, with a tax receipt sent out for anything $10 or more.
