Carolan gains permanent title to his role as CEO of Halo Air Ambulance

Jan 17, 2025 | 12:46 PM

HALO Air Ambulance has announce the permanent appointment of Paul Carolan as chief executive officer.

The first time the job has been a permanent role since HALO began in 2007.

Carolan said he joined HALO in 2019, previously holding the position on a contract basis.

“I started out as a contractor and that’s been in place since until the end of 2024, and as my contract was coming to an end, we were taking a look at the strategic alignment with how we handle our staffing and what the future looks like,” Carolan said.

“The decision was made to move this position to a permanent on-staff position.”

Carolan said they have been incredibly successful and fortune to connect with the community.

“Certainly from a fundraising perspective, we brought on a significant amount of rural municipalities,” Carolan said.

“Perhaps the most significant milestone was having the province of Alberta join us as a funding partner and something that we had targeted and made sure that everybody around us knew was a critical missing piece to our puzzle,” he added.

“Those things are incredible and amazing and certainly a team effort. Our board of directors is phenomenal and I have a great team here and we have a great team on the flight side. “

Carolan said the other thing that I think we’re really proud of is just the branding and just the reputation of HALO and making sure that we’re front of mind.

“Even though we have government funding, we still have to raise more than half,” Carolan said.

“We have to make sure that we stay in those considerations when people are deciding where they’re going to donate.”

Carolan has seen growth with the organization since he joined.

“When I joined, there was two of us and very specific roles and over time, those sort of evolved,” Carolan said.

“Since then, we’ve brought on a part-time financial administrator that works with us four days a week and a full-time program development person who works full-time. We’re up to a team of four on the program side, which is great,” he added.

“There’s a ton of work, a bunch of heavy lifting to do.”

Carolan said the added employees have allowed the board to move into more of a governance policy role.

“Where they really are incredible people. They’re all very successful in their own rights. They’re in a position where they can sit back and really focus on what the future of Halo looks like,” Carolan said.

“Provide those guardrails for us as we move forward in a day-to-day operational perspective.”

Carolan said his permanent appointment provides some stability and some clarity.

“I think HALO has grown to become incredibly strong and incredibly stable, and this appointment just aligns my role with that,” Carolan said.

“I’m here to stay. I’ve said for a long time that HALO is who I am, not whatI do. I’m incredibly honored to be a part of this program and incredibly honored to serve not only HALO but our community over the last six years,” he added.

“I’m really looking forward to this and what the future holds for all of us.”
